Named after the 16th-century Spanish chess player Ruy Lopez .

For a long time, the theory regarded this opening as a completely correct continuation, allowing Black to count on an equal game. Over time, however, resources were found for whites to gain an advantage.

It is rare in modern tournament practice.

Continuation 4. Qd1-e2

The modern theory regards this move as the most optimal for White, giving them a chance to gain an advantage. Further it is possible:

  • 4. ... f5: e4 5. Qe2-h5 + g7-g6 6. Qh5-e5 + Qd8-e7 7. Qe5: h8 Qg8-f6 - Black sacrifices the rook and entices the white queen to h8 [2] . At the same time, White can get a clear advantage after 8. b2-b3! d7-d5 9. Bc1-a3 c7-c5 10. Ba3: c5 Qe7: c5 11. Qh8: f6 d5: c4 12. Qf6: f4 .
  • 4.… Ng8-f6 5. e4-e5 Nf6-e4 6. Ng1-f3 Nf8-e7 7. d2-d3! Be7-h4 + 8. Cre1-f1 - with an advantage in White.
  • 4. ... Фd8-h4 + 5. Кre1-d1 f5: e4
    • 6. Kb1-c3 Kre8-d8! 7. Nc3: e4 c7-c6 8. Ng1-f3 Qh4-e7 - with equal play.
    • 6. Qe2: e4 + Bf8-e7 7. Bg1-f3 Bh5-h5 8. Rh1-e1 Bb8-c6 9. Bc4: g8 Bh8: g8 10. Bb1-c3 d7-d6 11. Bc3-d5! Bc8-f5 12. Qe4-c4 Bf5: c2 + 13. Kd1-e2! (accepting the sacrifice by the king or queen entails 13. ... Q: d5!) - Black has a critical position, it is not easy for him to defend himself from numerous threats.
