Nikolai Tkachev was born into a peasant family. After the end of the rural seven-year period he studied at the evening labor school and at the same time worked in production. After graduating from the Institute of National Economy in Minsk, he worked as a planner and economist in Polesie .
During World War II, Tkachev was a partisan, a fighter of a sabotage and subversive detachment operating in the territory of the Mogilev and Gomel regions.
After the liberation of Belarus from the Nazi invaders, Nikolai Tkachev took up journalism and literature.
He worked in the editorial office of the Mogilev regional newspaper [ which one? ] , then in the literary magazine Polymya in the city of Minsk and in the republican newspaper Literatura i mastastva . In addition, Nikolai Tkachev is the creator and first head of the largest Belarusian publishing house “ Mastatskaya Literatura ”. He served as executive secretary of the Union of Writers of the BSSR.
