Biography
Born on August 19, 1894 in Tattendorf , a suburb of Vienna , Neucil was born. Her father Josef Novozhil (Josef Neužil), a native of Bohemia , was a schoolteacher, and mother Tekla Pfnaisl - a laborer. In 1906, after the death of his father, his mother and daughter moved to Vienna. According to one legend, Valli was originally a model for Gustav Klimt . In 1911, the 17-year-old Valli Noyzil posed for Egon Schiele , they began a romance. Having decided to leave Vienna, the couple settled in the Czech town of Krumau . The cohabitation of young people caused discontent among local residents, and the couple was forced to move to Neulengbach , near Vienna. In 1912, Schiele was accused of molesting one of the minors who visited his workshop. The police found more than a hundred drawings in him that were declared pornographic. Subsequently, the charges of kidnapping and molesting a minor were rejected, but the artist was found guilty of distributing pornography. Since Schiele had already been in prison for 21 days before the trial, he was sentenced to imprisonment for only three days with confiscation of scandalous drawings. Valli was one of the few close friends of Shile who visited him in prison. Having become a famous artist, Schiele in 1915 broke up with Valli and married Edith Harms from a prosperous petty-bourgeois family who lived opposite his studio. The artist suggested to Valli to go on vacation together once a year, but the girl refused. After parting with Schiele Valli, she signed up for nursing courses, after which she worked in a military hospital in Vienna, and since 1917 in the town of Xin near Split in Dalmatia. There, Valley Neucil died of scarlet fever on December 25, 1917. There is a legend (unconfirmed) that upon learning of the death of Valli, Schiele changed the name of his painting “Man and Girl” to “Death and Girl”, where he himself acted as death. In fact, the painting "Death and the Girl" was written by Schiele in 1915, during a period of painful break with the Valley.
Impact
The painting “ Portrait of Valli Neucil ” is one of the most famous paintings of Egon Schiele [1] . The scandal around the rights to it forced the Austrian Parliament in 1998 to adopt a law on the accelerated restitution of works from collections of national museums in the event that their theft is proved [2] . A documentary about “Portrait of Wally” (2012) was filmed about these events. In the 1980 film Egon Schiele Scandal ( German: Egon Schiele - Exzesse), the role of Valli Neuzil was played by Jane Birkin .
