Courant (walking) stamp , chime stamp ( German: Kurantmark , French Mark Courant ) - a common unit of account for silver coins , which was the main in the northern lands of the Hanseatic cities and in neighboring states until the introduction of the gold standard in 1871.
History
At the beginning of its history, the term mark was used as the weight unit for silver coins. Starting from the 13th century in Lübeck , the Cologne mark began to be used for calculations. Since the XV century, the brand, as a monetary unit, has become the main for many German, Baltic and Scandinavian states. Since 1403, 5 6/10 Lubeck brands have been equated to 1 weight grade pure silver.
In 1506 - 1560, a state mark was put into circulation in Hamburg , Luneburg , Wismar and Lübeck . Since 1524, the Cologne brand weighing 233.856 grams began to serve as the standard of the weight unit for all German lands and the lands of the Baltic region. In 1566 , after the adoption of the Augsburg Imperial Coin Charter, thaler became the main currency, but the mark continued to play an important role in the monetary systems of countries and amounted to 16 shillings , or ⅓ thaler [1] .
In the 18th century, the Hamburg and Lübeck brands began to be equated with the new Reichstaller. 32 shillings = 1 Reichstaller, while devalued thaler = 9 shillings. Later in the Hanseatic cities and neighboring principalities for the shilling and mark coins the French term corant ( French Courant ) was introduced - walking. Since 1788, this term began to be applied on the lands of Schleiswig-Holstein . By the 19th century, the chime-mark became the main trading coin .
In 1871, the term “chime-mark” finally disappeared in connection with the introduction of the common-empire currency - the golden mark [2] /
