Socket TR4 (short for Socket Ryzen Threadripper 4 , also Socket SP3r2 ) is a type of connector from AMD for the Ryzen Threadripper microprocessor family , presented on August 10, 2017 [1] [2] [3] . Physically very close to the server socket AMD Socket SP3 , however, it is incompatible with it. [3]

Socket TR4 was the first LGA-type connector for consumer products from AMD (previously, LGA was used by it in the server segment, and processors for home computers were manufactured in the FC-PGA type case). [four]
The socket supports processors with 8–32 cores and provides the ability to connect RAM via 4 channels of DDR4 SDRAM . 64 PCI Express Lines of the 3rd generation (4 are used for the chipset), several USB 3.1 and SATA channels [5] [6] pass through the socket.
Uses the chipset X399 supports processors segment HEDT (High-End Desktop [7] ) costing 500-1000 dollars. [8] Processors using TR4:
- AMD Ryzen Threadripper (August 2017)
- Threadripper 1950X (16 cores) 32 threads, L3 cache = 32 MB, TDP = 180 watts.
- Threadripper 1920X (12 cores) 24 threads, L3 cache = 32 MB, TDP = 180 watts.
- Threadripper 1900X (8 cores) 16 threads, L3 cache = 16 MB [9] , TDP = 180 W.
- AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2 (August 2018)
- Threadripper 2990WX (32 cores) [10] 64 threads, L3 cache = 64 MB, TDP = 250 watts.
- Threadripper 2970WX (24 cores) 48 threads, L3 cache = 64 MB, TDP = 180 watts.
- Threadripper 2950X (16 cores) 32 threads, L3 cache = 32 MB, TDP = 180 watts.
- Threadripper 2920X (12 cores) 24 threads, L3 cache = 32 MB, TDP = 180 watts.
It uses a complex multi-stage process of mounting the processor into the socket using special retaining frames: internal, fixed with latches to the cover of the microcircuit, and external, fixed with screws to the socket [11] . Journalists note the very large physical size of the connector and socket, calling it the largest format for consumer processors. Due to its size, it needs specialized cooling systems capable of diverting up to 180 W [12] (up to 250 W in the case of processors with the suffix WX).
