SpreadThe atoll variegated pigeon is widely distributed on the islands of the Tuamotu archipelago , which are part of French Polynesia. The 1999 survey found that it is rarely found on five of the eight islands visited, but others have found that it is found quite often on some atolls that were left free from the devastation of imported predators. EcologyThe colorful pigeon atoll is the only pigeon in the world in the tropical Pacific Ocean, adapted exclusively to low coral atolls . Dwells in forests and abandoned coconut plantations. It mainly feeds on insects and seeds, usually on the ground. This species also eats the leaves of the trees β tafano β or β kahaia β (Guettarda speciosa) with odorous flowers. [one]
ThreatsThe atoll pied pigeon is threatened by predation by rats , which created colonies on a small number of islands. This species is also susceptible to habitat destruction as a result of deforestation and the destruction of old, abandoned coconut plantations. The species is rather tame and is rarely found in human settlements, which makes hunting a possible threat. [one]
