Elections to the Legislative Assembly of Aden (1955)

Elections to the Legislative Council were held for the first time in the Aden colony in 1955. However, only four of the Council members of 18 seats were elected. [1] Restrictions on suffrage related to age, gender, property, and settledness were introduced. Only about 5,000 people participated in the vote, [2] restrictions ensured that only loyalists in the government were elected. after the elections, there were protests about the restriction of suffrage and the desire for independence.

Background

Changes to the Constitution of the colony were announced on July 20, 1955. [3] Council membership was increased from 16 to 18, one official and one unofficial member added. The number of nominees fell from eight to five, one of which will be chosen by the governor to represent the business sector.

Of the Elected Members, one is elected by the members of the Aden Municipal Council and three in single-member constituencies.
