Biography

Nikolai Ivanovich Mordovchenko was born in Ryazan in 1904, after graduating from high school in 1921 he entered the Ryazan Institute of Public Education, in the historical department. From 1925 to 1929 he studied at the verbal department of the Higher State Courses in Art History at the Leningrad State Institute of Art History . While studying in Ryazan and in Leningrad, he worked as a librarian, in 1927 he published the first scientific work “On the bibliography of S. A. Yesenin” (Ryazan, 1927). Since 1934 he worked as a senior researcher at the Institute of Russian Literature of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR ( Pushkin House ), at the same time he taught at the Leningrad Institute of Philosophy, History, Linguistics and Literature (LIFLI) , Leningrad State University .

In 1938 he defended his thesis on "Essays on the history of Russian journalism of the 30s of the XIX century." In 1948, a doctorate in Russian criticism of the first quarter of the 19th century. Since 1949 - professor, head of the department of Russian literature at Leningrad University. At the meeting on April 5, 1949 to "study" the university philologists as part of the " fight against cosmopolitanism " campaign, he became the only one to speak in their defense [1] .

The author of many scientific works on Russian literature of the XIX century, among his main topics are Pushkin, Gogol, Lermontov, Belinsky, Decembrists. Laureate of the Belinsky Prize (1953, posthumous).
