History

Mariposa was founded as a mining camp on the banks of the seasonal Aqua Fria River around 1849. It is one of the most southern villages associated with the gold rush. The first settlement was located about 10 km from the existing one. After the floods of 1849/1850 and the fires, the village relocated due to its more favorable position on the Mariposa River and its gold deposit. Most of the city's territory under the Spanish grant belonged to John Freemont , who laid most of the streets of the village. In 1851, Mariposa became a district center. In 1854, the district court building was built, which is still functioning [1] [2] . In July 2017, a strong fire led to the evacuation of almost the entire Mariposa population [3] .
