History

Appears on the maps of the city since 1828 (New Street). A significant place on the street, on the left side of Bazarnaya from Kanatnaya to the future Leontovich Street , was occupied by the buildings of the Meshkov cable factory. Later, the Archangelo Mikhailovsky Nunnery College Monastery appears on Novaya Street, on October 27, 1864, the street receives a new name — Mikhailovskaya.

In 1895, the Odessa City Council applied for the renaming of Novaya Street to Marazli Street to perpetuate the memory and long-term social activities of the former Mayor of the Privy Councilor Marazli . On November 23, 1895, this petition was granted.

April 30, 1920 the street was renamed in honor of the creator of the theory "Scientific Communism", scientist and philosopher Friedrich Engels . At the end of 1920, the Odessa Cheka moved to the street, occupying a plot with all front and courtyard buildings, bounded by Sabansky Lane (the house of engineer Morgulis) and Marazliyevskaya and Kanatnaya streets, and remained here (in the form of its successors - GPU, NKVD) until leaving Odessa By the Red Army in 1941. The Romanian military commander's office and the headquarters of the Romanian 10th Infantry Division are located here by the Romanians. On October 22, 1941, in the building of the commandant’s office there was an explosion of a radio-controlled mine, which had been laid there by sappers of the Red Army even before the surrender of the city by Soviet troops. As a result of a powerful explosion, the building partially collapsed, 67 people were killed under the rubble, including 16 officers, among whom was the Romanian commandant of the city, General Ion Glogajanu .

During the period of the Romanian occupation during World War II, the street is called Marazlievskaya. The same name is assigned to the street permanently on September 20, 1991.

Famous architects, in particular, D. Mazirov , L. L. Vlodek , Yu. Dmitrenko , V. Prokhaska, were built on the street.
