Biography

Occurred from the noble family of Vicenza, received a military education. He led a life full of adventures, military bouts and love affairs [3] . He wrote Rhymes about military and political events, published in 1539, and in 1857 his Historical Letters were published [2] .

He is considered the author of The Newly Found Story of Two Noble Lovers ( Italian: Historia nuovamente ritrovata di due nobili amanti ), published in 1530 [2] and reprinted with Rhymes in 1539 as edited by Pietro Bembo . Healing the wounds of body and soul in his villa in Monte Vicentino , Luigi wrote this story about the pains of Romeo and Juliet. Subsequently, William Shakespeare gained inspiration from it for his famous tragedy "Romeo and Juliet" [4] .

To places of creation of the work of Luigi da Porto - his villa Da Porto Barbara in Montorso, fans of the love work do not flock to Verona.

Romeo and Juliet

The source of inspiration for the history of Porto, probably, was the story by Maruccio Salernitza “ Mariotto and Ganozza ” , Which he reworked and introduced many elements that were later adopted by an English playwright [5] . Luigi da Porto introduced the heroes of Mercutio, Tibald Capulletti, the monk Lorenzo, Paris; also thanks to him, scenes with a ball and a double suicide of lovers in a crypt appeared [6] .

From the very beginning of the work, a parallel with historical realities can be traced: the insertion of battles, where da Porto participated, the march from Gradisca to Udine , the archer Pilgrim is a friend of the writer who comforted Luigi after disappointment in love. Events unfold in the hometown of Pilgrim - Verona .

The names of the two warring families of Cappelletti and Montecca, perhaps, come from the Dante work, which recalls the unhappy love of Paolo and Daria from the warring families in verses by Gaspara Ambrogio Visconti “Two lovers.” Also, thanks to Alighieri, the name Romeo, the hero of Romeo di Villanova from the song VI v.127, appeared. The story is transferred during the time of Bartolomeo della Scala in 1301-1304, to the city of Verona, which during the life of Porto was of strategic importance for Venice [7] [8] .

The so-called castles of Romeo and Juliet In Montecchio Maggiore , which were in fact the fortresses of scaligér.

From the windows of the author’s native villa overlooking the majestic fortifications of the Scaligers in Montecchio (now called Castles of Romeo and Juliet ). They inspired Luigi to create the main concept of the work of irreconcilable families. In the name of Montecchio it is easy to catch a connection with the name of Romeo Montecchi.

Recent studies confirm the autobiographical history of da Porto. Behind the images of Romeo and Juliet are the identities of Luigi and his cousins Luczy Savorgnan [5] [3] . Luigi fell in love with the 16-year-old Lucina at the ball, where she impressed the guests with her magnificent singing, but later, due to a conflict of families, married Frasco Savornian del Torro [9] . The lovers were involved in the feuds between Strumieri and Zamberlini at the beginning of the 16th century in Friuli. The result of contention was a massacre on Fat Thursday . In support of this theory is the connection between the historical chronicles of Friuli and the details of the work of da Porto, as well as some details of the city of Udine , and not of Verona .
