History
Before the arrival of the Spaniards, the territory of the municipality was inhabited by representatives of the Indian tribes of Malibu ( malibúes ) and Chimil . The settlement, from which the city later grew, was founded in 1737 and was originally called San Antonio del Peñón . The municipality of El Peñón was separated into a separate administrative unit in 1995 [1] .
Geographical position
The city is located in the eastern part of the department, on the left bank of the Magdalena River , approximately 226 kilometers southeast of the city of Cartagena , the administrative center of the department. The absolute height is 20 meters above sea level [2] .
The municipality of El Peñon borders on the west and southwest with the territory of the municipality of San Martin de Loba , in the southeast - with the municipality of Rechidor , in the northeast - with the territory of the department of César , in the north - with the territory of the department of Magdalena . The area of the municipality is 327 km² [1] .
Population
According to the National Administrative Department of Statistics of Colombia, the total population of the city and municipality in 2015 was 9,484 people [3] . The dynamics of the population of the municipality by years:

According to the 2005 census, men made up 54.1% of the population of El Peñón, women - 45.9%, respectively. Racially, whites and mestizos accounted for 98.9% of the city's population; Negroes , mulattoes and Raysals - 1%; Indians - 0.1% [4] . The literacy rate of the entire population was 82.9%.
Economics
59.3% of the total number of urban and municipal enterprises are trade enterprises, 27.1% are industrial enterprises, 13.6% are service enterprises [4] .
