History

Before the arrival of the Spaniards, the territory of the municipality was inhabited by representatives of the Indian tribes of Malibu ( malibúes ) and Chimil . The settlement, from which the city later grew, was founded in 1737 and was originally called San Antonio del Peñón . The municipality of El Peñón was separated into a separate administrative unit in 1995 [1] .

The city is located in the eastern part of the department, on the left bank of the Magdalena River , approximately 226 kilometers southeast of the city of Cartagena , the administrative center of the department. The absolute height is 20 meters above sea ​​level [2] .
The municipality of El Peñon borders on the west and southwest with the territory of the municipality of San Martin de Loba , in the southeast - with the municipality of Rechidor , in the northeast - with the territory of the department of César , in the north - with the territory of the department of Magdalena . The area of ​​the municipality is 327 km² [1] .

Economics

59.3% of the total number of urban and municipal enterprises are trade enterprises, 27.1% are industrial enterprises, 13.6% are service enterprises [4] .
