The Saarbrücken Radio and Television Orchestra ( German: Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Saarbrücken ) is a German symphony orchestra operating in the city of Saarbrücken . Founded in 1937
The most significant page in the history of the orchestra was opened by its leader in the 1970s. Hans Zender, who established the regional festival “Music in the 20th Century” ( German: Musik im 20. Jahrhundert ), within the framework of which there is a collaboration of musicians and musical groups from Saar , Luxembourg and Lorraine . The festival has repeatedly hosted world and European premieres of works by Pierre Boulez , Luigi Nono , John Cage , Mauricio Kagel and other prominent contemporary composers. A notable event was also the recording of Bruckner symphonies, performed in the 1990s by the main guest conductor of the orchestra, Stanislav Skrovachevsky .
In 1952-1972 in parallel, the Saar Radio Chamber Orchestra also performed under the direction of Karl Ristenpart , and after 1968, Antonio Janigro . In 1972 this group was connected to the main orchestra.
In 2007, for financial reasons, the Orchestra was merged with the Kaiserslautern Radio Orchestra , resulting in the formation of the Philharmonic Orchestra of the German Radio Saarbrücken and Kaiserslautern .
