In the battle of Salamanca, Marshal Marmont was seriously injured and was evacuated to France - Denis, most likely, followed him. After recovering in 1813, Marmont was appointed army commander in Germany , and one of his first orders was to confer the rank of colonel on his own adjutant, Charles-Marie Denis. He participated in numerous battles in Germany, including the battle of peoples near Leipzig . After the capture of Paris in 1814 he signed a separate (from Napoleon's point of view) surrender of the troops of Marshal Marmont as his first adjutant [1] [2] .

On February 12, 1837 he was appointed Governor-General of the French colonies in North Africa. The first task was to resume the campaign against Constantine (the previous shooter was a fiasco), for which by mid-August he concentrated in the city of Bon a small ( 13,000 people ), but well-equipped detachment with a siege park (17 guns). He spoke on October 1 and on the 6th approached Constantine . Immediately upon arrival, the construction of siege batteries began. On October 7, the garrison made 2 sorties simultaneously, but was repelled. On October 12, part of the city wall collapsed. Damremont invited the defenders of the fortress to surrender, but they refused. On the same day, when visiting the breach, General Damremont was killed by a cannonball [5] [6] .

The general left a widow and two children [5] .

By order of King Louis Philippe, the remains of General Damremont were buried in Paris at the Invalides House [5] . For the first time, a magnificent requiem , written by Hector Berlioz [7], sounded at the burial.
