Presidential Election in Singapore (2017)

The Singapore presidential election was held on September 13, 2017 . Former Singapore President Tony Tan resigned on August 31. The election was the first presidential election after amendments to the Constitution, according to which the presidency is reserved for a certain national group according to a certain model [1] . The 2017 election was reserved for the “Malay race,” the Singaporean minority whose representative has not been president since 1970. [2]

Election resultHalima Jacob became the 8th President of Singapore .

The nomination ended on September 13 and the elections were scheduled for September 23. [3] [4] [5] [6] However, in accordance with the strict criteria laid down in the Constitution, the Electoral Commission announced on September 11 that it had registered the only candidate, Halima Jacob , formerly the speaker of parliament. Accordingly, on September 13, Halima Jacob was declared president-elect [7] [8] and was inaugurated as president the next day, becoming the 8th president of Singapore [9] .

The next presidential election of 2023 will be open.
