History

The Geological Museum is part of a two-story stone building built in 1882. Initially, the building housed the Mining College.

Evgraf Stepanovich Fedorov arrived in the village of Turyinsky mine in May 1894 as the head of exploration in the Bogoslovsky mountain district . In addition, he taught at the district mining school, which was opened in 1884. The Geological Museum, which collected about 80 thousand exhibits of rocks, was founded at the laboratory of the school.

Creating a museum, E. S. Fedorov saw its purpose, first of all, in that it "concentrated all materials on the geological structure of the district, the results of exploration - reports, notes, cores and thin sections . In other words, it will be a geological headquarters ... ” [2] . In 1898 the museum became open to visitors, but at the same time it was of practical importance for many years.

Thanks to the samples of rocks and maps available at the Fedorov Geological Museum, in the early 1930s, the geologist N. A. Karzhavin , practically without leaving the museum building, made an outstanding geological discovery - the “Little Red Riding Hood” bauxite ore deposit [3] .

In Soviet times, the museum to them. E. S. Fedorova received official status, and in 1979 the scientist’s personal account was restored in the museum.

Since the founding of the museum, showcases, a desk, a bookcase, bookcases, cabinets for graphic documentation, which themselves became exhibits, have been preserved.

Exposition

In the halls of the museum, collection samples of Ural gems , crystals, rare and unusual in shape and combination of minerals, and mineral samples typical of the region are presented. The collection of minerals complements the collection of semi-precious stones . A significant part of the museum exposition is occupied by paleontological finds, fossil flora and fauna found in this area [4] [5] .

The museum’s collection contains more than 180 thousand museum items. Including: 117 thousand samples of collection material, 62 thousand - thin sections, 3 thousand sheets of cartographic material, 4.5 thousand books, magazines, brochures. The largest in volume is a collection of samples of minerals and rocks related to this region.

Many genuine things that E. S. Fedorov and his associates used: microscopes, cameras, universal Fedorov tables , analytical and technical scales, compasses, geodetic and geological tools, grinding machines, chemical dishes, drawing accessories [3 ] .

On the territory adjacent to the museum building is the Museum of Mining Engineering, which includes genuine geological exploration tools [6] .
