"Odysseus, the Son of Laertes" is a dilogy novel written in 2000 by Henry Lyon Oldie . The novel is a rethinking of the Iliad and the Odyssey .
The plot is related to the novel “The hero must be alone ”, although it is not its direct continuation (but the characters, for example, Hercules - a direct continuation, as well as past events).
The novel consists of two books, The Man of Nomos and The Man of Space. Many characters in the novel, one way or another, moved from the book "The hero must be alone ."
The plot is connected with Andrei Valentinov ’s dilogy “ Diomedes, the son of Tydeus ” (“I will not return” and “I will not return”). These books present views from different perspectives on the same events.
Story
Odysseus , the son of Laertes - the heir to the Ithaca Basilevia. Many consider him crazy, and, in a certain sense, this is so - he sees the shadows of those who did not leave for Erebus after death, as well as the gods in their invisible state. Communicating with shadows invisible to others created him a reputation as a madman. The young man dreams of the exploits that his idol, Hercules , performed, and receives them in abundance. When the gods of Olympus, who decided to leave people, but not leave their divine blood in their mortal veins, collect all the heroes of Hellas under Troy , Odysseus goes there with everyone, although he does not want to leave Penelope's young wife.
His return, due to the intrigues of the god Kron released from Tartarus, has been delayed for decades. Odysseus, like other heroes, practically becomes a god, and the gods “cannot return home,” according to Hermes . But Odysseus, after many trials, still managed to return.
“I'll be back,” is the refrain of the entire dilogy.
Characters
- Odysseus is the protagonist of the dilogy, narration is being conducted on his behalf. Son of Laertes, grandson of Autolycus, great-grandson of Hermes. The red-haired young man is slightly limping, and each time on a different leg, a wonderful archer, a madman, a student of Eros himself, beloved of Athena.
- Laertes - Laertes-the-Pirate, Laertes-Sadovnik, the father of Odysseus, one of the Argonauts, Ithaca’s Basil until his abdication in favor of Odysseus. The secret leader of all Greek pirates, the Foamy Brotherhood. During the campaign of the Argonauts in Colchis, he crossed the border of the Achaean Nomos, which made him, like his island Ithaca, invisible to the gods - provided that the latter are not named by name.
- Anticlea - mother of Odysseus, daughter of Autolycus .
- The old man - the shadow of the deceased grandfather of Odysseus, Autolycus Hermesis , accompanies his grandson all his life, helping him with advice or simply silence.
- Alkim - adviser to Laertes Basilei, then - Odyssey. Cripple - one leg “dried up”, later died of cancer. Father of Mentor , childhood friend of Odysseus.
- Euriclea is a slave, subsequently freed, the nurse and nanny of Odysseus. By birth - an Egyptian, a mistress (priestess and sorceress). Very beautiful.
- Eumeus is a slave teacher of Odysseus, his faithful companion. A pockmarked, lame man, from a young age, was a pirate.
- Telemachus (elder) - Far Away, god Eros , childhood friend of Odysseus, who taught him how to shoot from a bow. He appeared in the guise of a dark-haired curly-haired boy with a toy, skillfully made bow.
- Athena - Owl and Snake, Olive and Fortress, patron goddess and lover Odysseus, mother of his friend Diomedes.
- Diomedes Tidides - the son of Tydeus and Athena, the great hero, Vanactus of Argos . Friend and ally of Odysseus. Blue-eyed, slender young man.
- Palamed is the brother-in-law of the Odyssey. A plump, sleek, soft and pleasant person. Sneaky politician capable of killing in the back. Invented money and gambling. Was an idol for Odysseus, he considered him a friend, although Palamed talked with Odysseus only for political reasons. Stoned with the assistance of Odysseus during the Trojan War.
- Penelope is the wife of Odysseus, the daughter of a valley nymph and Ikaria , the brother of Basileus Sparta Tyndareus . The red-haired, green-eyed girl who was trying to doom to the fate of the celibate priestess of Artemis-Orthia.
- Telemachus (the youngest) is the son of Odysseus and Penelope. Laertes, father of Odysseus, named him after the friend and teacher of Odysseus - Eros. A young man who earnestly dreams of becoming the same as his father, but is practically incapable of a feat. The tribal curse does not act on him - he is absolutely normal.
- Elena Troyanskaya is the daughter of Zeus and Nemesis (in the myths - Leda ), an earth goddess, an instrument of retribution of the gods. A short, incredibly beautiful woman (despite his advanced age for a person), with golden hair and very white skin. In the world of shadows, it looks like a terrifying winged monster with a sword and scales (attributes of Nemesis) on its belt.
- Ligeron Pelid - Achilles . The son of Peleus and the sea titanides Thetis . Not really a person, if not to say - nonhumans - psychologically, by the level of psychological development - a small child. A hermaphrodite sea werewolf, two years old, could take the form of a boy or girl of marriageable age, as well as a boy of ten years. Invulnerable to any weapon, insane in battle. Only his mentor and lover, Patroclus , could keep him in battle, as Ligeron instinctively circumvented him.
- Angel - singer- aed , as it turns out, the god Hermes . Great-grandfather and friend of Odysseus. (The image almost completely coincides with the image of Hermes the Dummy in the book “The Hero Must Be Alone ”).
- Hercules is the great hero of Hellas. (The image completely coincides with the image of Hercules in the book “The hero must be alone”).
- Iolaus is a former charioteer of Heracles. Amphitrion Perseid , introduced into the body of a grandson. (The image completely coincides with the image of Iolaus-Amphitrion in the book “The Hero Must Be Alone”).
World of the novel
The novel presents an interesting concept of the universe, explaining the inconsistencies in the concept of geography among different ancient peoples. The whole universe is called Cosmos - the universe. Space is discrete - it consists of mutually isolated Nomos, each of which represents a separate world, whose inhabitants objectively imagine its structure. For example, the Achaean Nomos includes the territory of modern Greece and some adjacent territories, for example, Egypt. At the same time, Egypt - but already somewhat "different," parallel, is the center of another Nomos - the Black Earth, Ta-Kemet. Between different Nomoses there is a certain space that does not obey physical laws, called the Ocean by the Achaeans. People can move between Nomos, in principle, without disturbing their structure, although this is not easy. But in some cases, when the borders are violated, the Nomos "grow together", becoming one world with modern geography (see " Theory of Semenov-Zuser ").
Some fusion of Nomos are described in the novel. This is the destruction of the community of blessed lotophages by Odysseus on the one hand, and Moshe (Moses), on the other (the explanation of forty years of wandering in the desert is explained by the nonlinearity of time in space). This is also the discovery of Nomos, subsequently called Italy (from the words "Ithaca" and "Aetolia" - the names of the native lands of Odysseus and Diomedes, respectively) by Odysseus and Diomedes.
Mismatches with the novel “The hero must be alone”
- In the novel “The Hero Must Be Alone”, Hermes has brown eyes, in the second novel - blue.
- In the first novel there are no hints that Alcides or Iphicles survived under the name of Heracles (according to the official version of the gods - Alcides, but Amphitrion-Iolaus still does not find out the truth), in Odyssey, the son of Laertes, one can more confidently assume that he remained It is Iphiclus.
- In the novel “The hero must be alone” Dejanira, the wife of Hercules, committed suicide by falling on his sword. In the second novel, she hanged herself on her own belt. This discrepancy corresponds to a discrepancy in ancient Greek sources: according to Sophocles Dejanir pinned [1] , according to Diodorus - hanged herself [2] .
