History
Before the conquest of the Maghreb by Muslims in the 7th century , the building of the future mosque was an Orthodox church . In 678, Dinar Abu Muhajer turned the church into a mosque. For a long time, the mosque, in honor of its founder, was named after Dinar Abu Muhajer, but was later renamed in honor of the Muslim righteous from Oran Sidi Ghanem [1] . After the French conquered Algeria in 1830, the stables of the cavalry unit of the French army - African hunters - were placed in the building [2] . Currently, restoration work is underway in the building [3] .
First Maghreb Mosque
Sidi Ghanem Mosque is considered the second mosque built in the Maghreb after the Great Mosque of Kairouan . But according to Hokin Tautau of the Algerian National Center for Prehistoric, Anthropological and Historical Research, this mosque is actually the first of the ones built in the Maghreb [4] .
