Biography
He studied law in Palermo . In 1585 he was admitted to the Society of Jesus in Messina . In 1585, with a missionary purpose, he was sent to Japan. Immediately, through Lisbon, he went to India .
An outstanding pioneer missionary in Japan. In 1602, he began missionary work in Japan. Despite the publication of an edict expelling all Christian missionaries from the country, he remained on the islands.
He was the first European on about. Hokkaido , [1] [2] , the first missionary to reach the land of Yezo north of the Japanese island of Honshu (including Sakhalin and probably the Kuril Islands ) and to meet the Ainu . A tireless minister of faith, he was the first missionary to penetrate the hitherto unknown kingdoms of Yasu and Tsai.
Jerome de Angelis, converted many people in Japan to Christianity , seeing at the same time that his neophytes were brutally persecuted.
Captured and sentenced to death, he was publicly executed - burning at the stake.
Beatified on July 7, 1867 in Rome by Pope Pius IX in a group of 205 Japanese martyrs .
