The island has a length of 160 meters, a maximum width of 80 meters, its area is 8524 m², the length of the coastline is 523.6 m. [2] The main part of the island has the shape of a cone , its highest point is located at around 46 meters above the level of the lake [1] ( 1943 meters above sea level).
The island is located in the southwestern part of the lake in Emerald Bay in the Emerald Bay State Park . The distance to the nearest shore is about 260 meters.
There are ruins of a stone building on the island - this is a “ tea house ” owned by Laura Josephine Knight, the owner of the 38-room mansion, built in 1929 and still standing on the lake [3] .
Access to the island is carried out by water means of transport, swimming to it, despite the relatively short distance from the coast, is prohibited due to the low temperature of the water and the busy shipping traffic around the island [4] .
Throughout its history, the island bore many names: Coquette, Fanett (with one "n"), Baranoff, Dead Mans (Dead Man), Emerald, Hermits (Hermit). The last name is due to the fact that from 1863 to 1873 a certain captain Dick Barter lived on the island as a hermit . A native of England, he settled on this uninhabited island, swam a lot on the lake (usually in a state of extreme intoxication), independently built a church and his own tomb here. He was famous for the fact that he loved to show guests his legs, on which he had once himself amputated his fingers. Interestingly, the captain was never buried in the tomb, which he built himself, since he drowned during a storm near the lighthouse on October 18, 1873 [4] .
