The USSR Indoor Track and Field Championship 1988 was held on February 10-12 in Volgograd in the arena of the Institute of Physical Culture . Over 3 days, 22 sets of medals were played.

In the women's long jump, Galina Chistyakova showed the fourth result in world history, 7.23 m, losing 2 centimeters to her own country record. In the course of the competition, she jumped three times further than 7 meters: her assets also included attempts at 7.03 m and 7.21 m.
High results were shown by high jumpers. In men, four people took the bar at 2.32 meters, and in women's competitions Lyudmila Avdeenko and Larisa Kositsyna conquered the two-meter line.
World champion Natalya Lisovskaya pushed the core at 21.60 m, and this result was the fifth in world history. Only Gelena Fibingerova (three times) and Natalya herself (22.14 m a year earlier) managed to throw better.
The USSR indoor all-around championship was held separately on January 30β31, 1988 in Perm .

USSR All-Around Championship
Champions of the country in the all-around determined on January 30-31, 1988 in Perm in the arena "Spartak". The first record holder of the USSR after the IAAF approved the official order of species in the pentathlon was Inna Romanchenkova , who won the competition with a total of 4661 points. The winner of the men's competition, Pavel Tarnovetsky , also noted the highest all-union achievement in the octathlon - 6725 points [1] .
