Osman Turan (June 1914 - January 17, 1978) is a Turkish historian .

Biography
He was the third of four children. He studied at the schools of Chaykara , Bayburt and Ankara . Then he entered the University of Ankara . Thanks to the patronage of Fuat, Köprülü received a scholarship for further studies. In 1941, he received a Ph.D. for the work “Turkish calendar with 12 animals”, written under the direction of Köprülü. Then he taught at Ankara University [3] .
In May 1944, for closeness to Nihal, Atsyz was suspended from work by decision of the Minister of Education Hassan Ali Yujel . Turan was able to return to teaching only six months later thanks to the help of Memduh Shevket Esendal and Tahsin Banguoglu . In the years 1946-47 he served in the army. In 1948-50, he worked in Paris and London [3] .
In 1954 he was elected a member of the Great National Assembly . In 1959 he was elected chairman of the organization “ ”. After the coup of 1960, he was deprived of his post in parliament and university, and was arrested and held in custody for 16 months. In 1965 he was again elected a member of the Great National Assembly, this time from the Justice Party , however, two years later, due to a conflict with the party’s leader Suleiman Demirel , he was expelled from it [3] .
He died on January 17, 1978 from intracerebral hemorrhage [3] .
Personal life
He was married to the great-granddaughter of Abdul-Hamid II Saty Sultan [3] .
Scientific Contribution
A recognized specialist in Seljuk history. He wrote a number of articles related to the Seljuks in the encyclopedia of Islam. The most famous works: "The history of the Seljuks and Turkish-Islamic civilization" ( tour. Selçuklular Tarihi ve Türk-İslam Medeniyeti ; 1965), "Seljuk and Islam" ( tour. Selçuklular ve İslamiyet ; 1971), "History of the Turkic states in Eastern Anatolia" ( tour. Doğu Anadolu Türk Devletleri Tarihi ; 1973) and "Turks in Anatolia" ( tour. Türkler Anadolu'da ; 1973) [3] .
In 1949 he was elected a member of the Institute of Turkish History, and later was deprived of membership for political reasons [3] .
He was fluent in Farsi , Arabic and French [3] .
