Biography
During the First World War in 1917 he refused military service, was imprisoned until the end of the war. Member of the KKE . Member of the November Revolution of 1918 in Germany . Member of the Working Councils .
In the early 1920s, he was a social worker, a deputy of the Berlin district parliament from a faction of young communists. He graduated from evening school, later studied zoology at the University of Berlin .
Until the late 1930s, he was a freelance journalist and author of numerous scientific articles. He took the pseudonym Herbert Paats, in connection with Nazi censorship .
Then he gained popularity as a children's writer, author of books translated into several foreign languages (French, Dutch).
In the second half of 1944 he was credited to the Wehrmacht , but in November went missing in Prague.
Creativity
In a series of books about the old doctor Kleinmacher, the inventor of numerous processes, including miniaturization, for studying the animal world, plants and physical processes, the author describes a scientist who accompanies two children - a girl and a boy (the prototype was the author’s son Dieter) using a drug that reduces the size in their fantastic travels around the world of animals and plants.
