Biography

He was born in 1805 [3] in Troki in the family of Gazzan and Melammed Semyon (Simkhi) Firkovich. Mother - Anna Khaimovna [4] . He graduated from midrash and county school . Since childhood, he knew the Russian language, which since 1844 he taught at the Evpatoria Karaite school. He also spoke French and German [3] . He began to correct the Gazzan position in the Simferopol community from about 1838. Then for 10 years since 1840 he served as a Gazzan and Melammed in Sevastopol [5] (according to other sources - from 1842 to 1844) [6] . At this time, he began to actively help his father-in-law A.S. Firkovich, in particular, traveling with the archaeological target in the Caucasus in 1849-1850, exploring tombstones in the Karaite cemetery in the Jehoshaphat Valley near Chufut-Kale [7] . So, in 1847 they compiled a plan for this cemetery, dividing it into sections [8] . All manuscripts, coins and other values ​​collected in the Caucasus, as directed by the Caucasian governor M. S. Vorontsov, were transferred to the ownership of the Odessa Society of History and Antiquities [9] . Also, from the 1840s until his death, G. S. Firkovich was the financial director of A. S. Firkovich [10] , together with whom he defended the value and antiquity of the manuscripts and gravestone inscriptions they found before academic scholars [11] [12] . In 1857, he was ranked as a clergyman [4] and took up the post of senior Trosk Gazzan.

The author of a Hebrew essay in the genre of instruction and teaching (“musar” (from other Heb. מוסר , lit. “morality”) under the title “Zikaron Llador Aharon , or Notes by Gabriel Firkovich ”, dedicated to the financial disaster that befell him in the Urals in the late 1860s. The work was published in the form of a pamphlet in 1871 in Vilna after the death of Gabriel Firkovich [10] [13] .

Since the 1840s, he was married to the daughter of A. S. Firkovich - Milke [4] [6] . Had no children.

He died in the 2nd half of 1869 or at the beginning of 1870 [10] .
