Biography

Born in Birmingham on October 9, 1905 . Jeffrey's father died when the boy was three years old. He studied at Ipswich High School, then at Kingswood School in Bath . In 1926 he entered the University College of Nottingham (now - the University of Nottingham ), where he studied as a pharmacist. Then he moved to the Department of Botany, which he graduated in 1930.

For some time he studied viral diseases of plants at the Rotamsted experimental station, in 1931 he was appointed mycologist at the Chestnut scientific station.

In 1934, he defended a Ph.D. thesis at the University of London, in which he studied tomato viral diseases.

In 1939-1945, Ainsworth worked as an assistant mycologist at the Imperial Mycological Institute in Kew. In 1946-1947, he headed the Mycology Department of the Wellkam Physiological Research Laboratories, studied antibiotic substances, and isolated the antibiotic aerosporin from the bacterium Bacillus aerosporus .

Since 1948 he worked at the Department of Botany of the University of Exeter , where he studied fungal diseases of animals and humans. From 1961 to 1964, Ainsworth was deputy director of the State Mycological Institute, then, until 1968, its director.

Together with Guy Richard Bisby, Ainsworth compiled the mycological dictionary Dictionary of the Fungi , first published in 1943, and re-published for the 10th time in 2008.

He died on October 25, 1998 .
