Biography
From 4 years old he studied violin. In 1940-1948 he studied at the Conservatory named after Luigi Cherubini in Florence, in 1956-1958 he took composition lessons from Max Deutsch in Paris, in the same place he became close with the theorist of the musical avant-garde Heinz-Klaus Metzger . Since 1954, he was part of the creative association Florentine School , founded by composer Bruno Bartolozzi . In 1958–1961, he attended the Summer Music Courses in Darmstadt , where he met Pierre Boulez and John Cage , whose influence he experienced in his work. The first works, marked by the influence of Luigi Dallapikkoly and Roberto Lupi written in dodecaphonic technique. One of the representatives of avant-garde trends. As a follower of John Cage, he widely used the aleatoric method. Participant of the "anti-music" concerts, for which he created works without any sounds at all. Among the compositions are numerous pieces for various vocal, instrumental and mixed compositions. In 1963, he became one of the founders of the " Group 70 " (Florence), specializing in concrete and visual poetry, published several collections of poems. In 1964-1965 he was an intern at the USA. In the years 1968-2001, he was a director, costume designer and set designer at Italy’s leading opera houses: La Scala (Milan), La Fenice (Venice); in 1975-1979 - the artistic director of this theater; “Massimo” (Palermo), “Reggio” (Turin) and others; only about 40 opera productions. Consultant, and in 1982-1983 - the director of the Festival Giacomo Puccini in Torre del Lago. In 1987–1991, he oversaw the music section of the Venice Biennale. In 1971–1974 he taught the history of opera at the Academy of Fine Arts in L'Aquila, and in 1980, composition and form at the Fiesole Music School.
