Biography

Born March 12, 1836 [1] .

Educated in the Conductor companies of the Training Marine Workers Crew in St. Petersburg . In 1855, the ensign of the Marine Engineers Corps, N. A. Samoilov, was an assistant to the naval engineer, Lieutenant Colonel A. Ya. Gesekhus , in the design and construction of reserving systems for floating batteries, which were to be used to repel the attack of British ships. The first of ten armored batteries was built in May 1856 by a shipbuilder Colonel S. I. Chernyavsky [2] [3] .

In August 1865, at the Nevsky Foundry and Mechanical Plant of Semyannikov and Poletiki , the armored cruiser “ Minin ” was laid down according to the design of N. A. Samoilov, the construction of which was A. Ya. Gesekhus [4] .

In November 1865, N. A. Samoilov was appointed to oversee the construction of the tower armored boat Charodeyka , which was built at the Galerny shipyard and launched on August 31, 1867. [5] . On October 19, 1868, the commander of the armored boat Charodeika, captain-lieutenant S. Akimov, submitted a report to the chief commander of the St. Petersburg port, A. V. Voevodsky, with a recommendation by N. A. Samoilov for the assignment of the rank of junior shipbuilder [6] .

Since 1870, lieutenants Samoilov and Kh. V. Prokhorov were appointed to oversee the construction of the world's first ocean-going armored cruiser “ General Admiral ” at the shipyard of the Nevsky Foundry and Mechanical Plant Semyannikov and Poletiki [7] .

In 1876, he proposed measures to the chairman of the shipbuilding department of the Marine Technical Committee I. S. Dmitriev , which can be taken to ensure the durability of the zinc plating of ships [6] .

Since 1878, Lieutenant Colonel N. A. Samoilov developed drawings of armored ships on the instructions of Vice Admiral A. A. Popov . In 1879-1880 he was the supervisor of the construction of the sail-screw clipper “ Oprichnik ” at the Baltic Shipbuilding and Mechanical Plant in St. Petersburg.

On March 10, 1880, by order of the Chief Commander of the Petersburg port, Vice Admiral Andreev was appointed Dmitry Donskoy as the chief builder of the ocean armored cruiser (half-armored frigate). On September 10, 1880, at the shipyard in the New Admiralty, the slipway assembly of the Dmitry Donskoy hull began, and at the same time a decision was made to build the same type of ship Vladimir Monomakh at the Baltic Shipbuilding and Mechanical Plant, where Lieutenant Colonel N. A. Samoilov was sent by the chief builder, and his position at the New Admiralty from December 18 was taken by the staff captain of the corps of ship engineers N. E. Kuteinikov [7] .

Since 1883, Colonel Samoilov was observing the construction of the first Russian armored cruiser with the Admiral Nakhimov tower artillery [8] .

Since 1887, the senior shipbuilder Samoilov served as chief inspector of shipbuilding [9] . Since 1890 - Acting Chief Inspector of shipbuilding, in 1891-92 - Chief Inspector of shipbuilding.

He was married to Samoilova Sofya Alexandrovna (August 14, 1842 - January 16, 1901) was buried with her husband. In January 1881, a son was born in the Samoilov family [1] .

He died on July 5, 1895 [1] . He was buried in the cemetery of Sergiev Primorsky Desert [10] .
