Biography

Before the revolution and until 1922, he was a prominent figure in the Socialist Revolutionary Party in the Vologda province.

Since 1923 - manager of the archive of agriculture, estates and palaces in the Leningrad branch of the Central Archive . Since 1930 - associate professor, then professor at the Leningrad Historical and Linguistic Institute . In 1932, he was suspended from work by the decision of the LILI party bureau for recommending to his students the use of β€œclearly counter-revolutionary literature ( Platonov and Ilovaysky )”. Since 1934 - a senior specialist at the Historical and Archaeographic Institute of the Academy of Sciences.

In 1938, he was arrested in the case of historians A.N. Shebunin , S.I. Kovalev , Y. M. Zaher . First he confessed, which he and the other defendants refused on September 14, 1939, on the first day of the meeting of the military tribunal of the Leningrad Military District. During the trial, the defendants described the torture used against them. On January 24, 1940, investigative actions against Martynov and several other defendants were discontinued, and they were released [1] .

Upon his release, he worked as an assistant professor at the Vologda Pedagogical Institute . Since 1945 - associate professor, then professor at the Leningrad Pedagogical Institute . He was again arrested in 1950, sentenced to 10 years, was released after the death of Stalin. In 1967 he defended his doctorate in historical sciences with a work on the topic β€œThe Gornozavod Ural on the eve of the Great Peasant War of 1773-1775”.
