An external capsule ( lat. Capsula externa , Eng. External capsule ) is a bundle of myelinated nerve fibers ( white matter ) in the brain , passing between the lateral (lateral) side of the lenticular nucleus and the brain wall (claustrum) .

The white matter of the outer capsule contains corticocortical associative nerve fibers. These nerve fibers are responsible for connecting different areas of the cerebral cortex to each other. The outer capsule itself looks like a thin sheet of white matter in the section [2] .
The outer capsule is an important way by which cholinergic nerve fibers from the so-called basal forebrain (located below and basal to the striatum of the structures of the basal nuclei ) pass to the cerebral cortex.
Near the lenticular nucleus, the outer capsule is connected to the inner capsule .
