Filmography of the Lumiere brothers

The Lumiere brothers are considered the creators of the cinema. The younger brother of Louis is the inventor of the Cinematograph apparatus, patented in February 1895, designed both for shooting and for demonstrating footage. Older brother Auguste is the organizer of the enterprise’s business. During the spring and autumn of 1895, the brothers created and showed at various closed events several short (less than a minute) films, and on December 28, 1895 the first publicly available paid movie screening took place in Paris on Kapucinok Boulevard ^{[1] [2]} .

During 1896-1897, the Lumiere brothers were engaged in the sale of Cinematograph apparatuses and film films, as well as the distribution of film materials of various operators created for the Lumiere company. They devoted much less time to independent filming. Already in 1897, under the pressure of competition, Louis completely stopped filming as a business, sold all his cinema patents and devoted himself to other projects ^{[1] [2]} .

In 1896-1905, the General Catalog of Positive Cinematographic Views from the Lumiere Collection was published ^{[Comm 1]} (the films were called “views”, French vue ). The names of the authors were not indicated in the catalog, and there were no titles on the films themselves, so it was difficult to establish the authorship of a particular “species”. Two years before the death of Louis Lumiere, in 1946, the cinema historian Georges Sadoule met with him and received from the creator of the movie a copy of the “Species Catalog ...”, on which films made directly by the Lumiere brothers were manually marked. In 1997, researchers Michelle Aubert and Jean-Claude Seguin et al prepared a voluminous work describing all the films made by both the Lumiere brothers themselves and other operators on their order - Sadul’s list was taken to determine authorship ^[3] . In 2015, based on the book, with the permission of its authors, the Lumiere Catalog website was created ^[4] .

In total, “Species Catalogs ...” for different years contain 1428 films (according to other sources - 1423 ^[5] ) films, of which 1418 ^[2] have been preserved. In addition, about 800 non-cataloged films are known. Of this huge amount, the filmmakers directly shot about 70 - with Auguste creating only one film, Weeds, the author of the rest was Louis ^{[2] [6] [7]} .

The Lumiere Brothers are preserving the legacy of the Lumiere Institute, established in 1982 in Lyon . In 1995, on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the first public display, the French government launched a program to disseminate the work of the Lumieres. From that moment on, about 350 films created by them and on their order, after a century-long break, became available to viewers: they were released on DVD or posted on the Internet. However, three quarters of the creative heritage of the founders of cinema is still inaccessible. Most of the films from the Lumieres collection at the beginning of the 21st century are stored in the French National Library ^{[Comm 2]} or in the French Film Archive ^{[Comm 3] [6]} .

The following is the filmography of the brothers Louis and Auguste Lumières: it displays all the films included in the “Species Catalog ...”, as well as non-cataloged films that participated in the first paid screening. Films sorted by premiere date.
