Early biography

Arkady Pugachevsky was born on October 19, 1937 into a Jewish family in Kiev. His father, Moses, was in charge of the workshop at the Oktyabr Book Factory, and his mother Raisa raised three children. Arkady always painted, from school he wrote poetry. At the age of 14, he already started working - engraving stamps, cylinders for printing tickets, etc., at his father's factory. From 1957 to 1960 he served in the army, then entered the graphic department of the Ivan Polyorov Ukrainian Printing Institute in Lviv. He studied in absentia while working. In 1962 he married Victoria Asonova.

Career

Upon graduation, Arkady received the position of graphic designer and illustrator. He was also responsible for the release of fashion catalogs - October’s own products. Later, Arkady Pugachevsky collaborated with publishers such as Radyansky Scribe, Dnipro, Molod. He engraved a lot of postcards for the Reklama publishing house. Among the most famous books illustrated by Arkady Pugachevsky are collections of Ivan Drach “Saber and Shawl” and “Telizhintsi”, Boris Oliynyk, Platon Voronko . In 1989-1990, he completely switched to free creativity.

Creativity

Engraving

The art of Arkady Pugachevsky has always been characterized by humor or light irony. Already in his youth, his drawings were published by the magazines Pepper and Ukraine . In 1989, Arkady and his son and student Gennady created a series of 12 engravings “Kiev Cathedrals” for the Ukrainian diaspora cooperative “Lira” in Canada. In 1990, Viktor Romanenko joined the work on another such series. These were their first two-tone engravings, which began the path to an ever-increasing palette. Now Arkady Pugachevsky is one of the few in the world who uses 10-12 boards.

Arkady Pugachevsky works in the technique of woodcut . His favorite topics throughout his career are the female body and music. Many mythological motifs. Engraving heroes are often clowns and animals, especially dogs. Later fabulous and literary motifs appeared. The artist works a lot in the nude genre. Each print is marked with the personal seal of the scarecrow owl, originating from the artist's name.

In 1990, his first (in association with several other artists) exhibition took place at the Architect's House in Lviv. Since then, Arkady exhibited in Ukraine, Poland, Austria, Denmark, Belgium, the Netherlands, the USA and China. In 1994, Arkady Pugachevsky with his son and student Gennady first went to the International Bookplate Congress in Malbork (Poland). The artist began to engage in ex-libris as a young man, making gifts to relatives and friends. Arkady Pugachevsky took part in more than 50 international exhibitions, received 18 awards, is a member of XYLON Ukraine, the German Exlibris Society (Deutschen Exlibris-Gesellschaft), the Society of Wood Engravers in the UK [1] . In 2007, a book of engravings by Arkady and Gennady Pugachevsky was published, published by the famous Ukrainian philanthropist Sergei Brodovich [2] . In 2012, Yakov Berdichevsky wrote an article about Arkady Pugachevsky in the ІХ edition of the annual almanac “Bibliophiles of Russia”. Arkady Pugachevsky is part of the Arthur Mario da Mota Miranda Bio-Bibliographic Encyclopedia of Contemporary Ex-Libris Art (Encyclopaedia Bio-Bibliographical Of The Art Of The Contemporary Ex-Libris). Sculpture

The first sculptural work of Arkady Pugachevsky can be considered the bronze medal of 1991 in memory of those who died in Babi Yar . However, only in 2006 the artist began to make bronze sculptures, the first of which is “Dachshund with a ball”.

Poetry

Arkady Pugachevsky has been writing poetry since his school years, but he published the first and only collection of "Beginnings" in 2011 at the A-Plus advertising agency with the support of Alexander Kovalev. On the cover of the book is an engraving by Arkady "Adam and Eve", designed by Gennady Pugachevsky. Almost all poems have comic elements, it is often caustic satire [3] .
