History
Middelburg at the end of the 16th century was one of the most significant cities in the Netherlands and a center for glassblowing. In 1581, the first glass-blowing furnace was opened in the Northern Netherlands, named after the master Howard van der Haegen. Starting in 1590, new Italian glass manufacturing technologies began to spread in Middelburg. Their improvement in the end led to the creation of a new optical device, the telescope, by Middelburg artisan Lippersgue . At the beginning of World War II, the city was badly destroyed by German troops.
In Middelburg, Isaac Beckmann , one of the pioneers of inertia , the sailor Jacob Roggeven , who discovered Easter Island and Daniel de Blik , the artist of the Golden Age of the Netherlands, was born.
