Icelanders reached the quarter finals, losing to the hosts of the tournament, the French national team , with a score of 2: 5. About Team
European Championships
Iceland has not previously played in the final stages of the European Championship . One of the most successful qualification campaigns for the country was the qualifying round of the 2004 European Championship , when a team led by Asgeir Sigurvinsson had a chance to take first or second place. To do this, it was necessary to defeat Germany and wait for the misfire of the Scottish team . However, Germany defeated the Icelanders with a score of 3: 0 and deprived them of a chance in the first place, and the Scottish victory over Lithuania left the Icelanders without a playoff selection for Euro 2004.
However, on September 6, 2015, having tied with the national team of Kazakhstan (0: 0), the Icelandic national team made a historic achievement, guaranteeing their first participation in the European Championship in their history [5] [6] .
In its first game at the 2016 European Championships, Iceland, whose composition consisted entirely of players from foreign championships, managed to escape from defeat in the match with the Portuguese . The author of the first goal of the national team at the European Championships was Birkir Biadnason . In the second match, the Icelanders tied with the Hungarians (1: 1), and in the third match they defeated the Austrians (2: 1), thanks to the goals of Jon Dadi Bedvarsson and Arnor Traustason . The Icelanders left the group from second place and in the 1/8 finals sensationally [7] beat the English (2: 1). The best player of this match was recognized as the author of the first goal into the goal of the English defender Ragnar Sigurdsson . On July 3, Icelanders in the quarter finals played with the hosts of the championship - the French , and lost 2–5.
At the end of the 2016 European Championship , Lars Lagerböck left the coaching post, and thus his assistant (2 head coach of the Icelandic national team), Heymir Hadlgrimsson, became the only head coach of the Icelandic national football team.
World Championships
For the first time, Iceland was close to entering the 2014 World Cup : in the selection for the tournament, the team led by Lars Lagerbek carried out its best cycle: having gained 5 wins and 3 draws and conceded only Switzerland in the group, it secured access to butt games for the first time in history where she met with the national team of Croatia . The first match in Reykjavik ended with the score 0-0, and in the second leg in Zagreb , the Croats won. Interestingly, when sowing, Icelanders took their place in the 6th (last) basket among the weakest teams in Europe.
The Icelanders successfully completed the selection for the World Cup in Russia , having gained seven victories in ten matches and leaving behind the strong teams of Croatia , Ukraine and Turkey , qualifying for the first time in the final part of the World Cup. Iceland became the most sparsely populated country, whose national team took part in the final championship tournament, breaking the “record” of the national team of Trinidad and Tobago .
In the first match in their history at the World Cup, Icelanders tied 1-1 with Argentina . Iceland scored a goal for Alfred Finnbogason . After that, the team lost to Nigeria 0: 2 and Croatia 1: 2 and with one point took the last place in the group.
Records
The friendly match with Estonia ( Tallinn , April 24, 1996) became unique: in the second half, Eidur Smari Gudjohnsen replaced his father Arnor . This was the first match in which both father and son played. Another milestone in Icelandic football was the victory of August 18, 2004 over the future world champion of the Italian national team with a score of 2: 0. Then 20,034 fans gathered for the match in Reykjavik - a record for a country with a population of 320 thousand people.
The record holder of the national team in the number of matches played is Runar Kristinsson , who in 1987-2004 played 104 matches (3 goals). Also in the top three are Hermann Hreidarsson and Eidur Gudjohnsen . Gudjohnsen is the top scorer in the history of the team, the second place at Kolbeinna Sigthorsson . Eidur Gudjohnsen’s father Arnor is also in the top 10 in terms of matches played and goals scored.
