Jan Chaplović ( Slovak: Ján Čaplowič , Hungarian. Csaplovics János , German: Johann von Csaplovics ); September 22, 1780, Austria-Hungary, Slovakia - May 29, 1847, Vienna ) - Austrian ethnographer , lawyer , Slavist , publicist . Traveled through the Slavic lands. In his works there are materials on the ethnography of the Eastern Slavs. [1] .

Biography

Since December 1799, he began his legal career as an official of the Chancellery. In 1804, Mr .. became vice-notary. In 1805 he received a lawyer's diploma. In the summer of 1808 he moved to Vienna. From September 1809 to May 1812 he lived and worked in Croatia. Y. Chaplovich from 1813 was the legal adviser to Count Schoenborn in Vienna, later managing his estates in Transcarpathia. [2] .

He was interested in Ukrainian and Ruthenian ethnography. In 1825 he published the monograph "Etnographia Ruthenorum" ("Ethnography of the Rusyns") on 250 pages with a detailed description of life, food, clothing, agriculture, crafts, crafts, trade, morality, calendar and family rites. The work of Y. Chaplovich was written on the basis of the monograph of the philologist and ethnographer Ivan Fogorashiy-Fedorovich (1786-1834), "Historical and Topographical Carpatho - or Ugro-Russians Description" (the fate of the manuscript is unknown). [2] .

In 1829 he published the map Ethnographische Karte des Konigreichs Ungern sammt Croatien, Slavonien, der ungrischen Militargrenze und der Seekuste / Nach Lipszky (Ethnographic map of the Kingdom of Hungary together with Croatia, Slavonia, Hungarian military cordon and Primorye. [3] .
