Biography

She was born in Jelenia Gora (now the city of Lower Silesian Voivodeship, Poland). The scientific and teaching activities of Hinchevskaya-Hennel are primarily associated with the Bialystok and Warsaw universities , the Institute of History of the Polish Academy of Sciences . She also taught at Harvard University (USA), National University “Kiev-Mohyla Academy” , Ukrainian Catholic University in Rome (Italy). The interest in Ukrainian history at Hinchevskaya-Hennel manifested itself even during his studies at the University of Warsaw, during a visit to the seminar of Professor B. Zentari.

In 1982, under the guidance of the famous Polish historian, Professor Z. Vuytsyk, she defended her doctoral dissertation on the study of the consciousness of the Ukrainian gentry and the Cossacks in early modern times. Several years ago, she published the monograph «wiadomość narodowa szlachty ukraińskiej i Kozaczyzny od schyłku XVI do połowy XVII wieku (Warszawa, 1985). The subject of research for the Khinchevskaya-Hennel habilitation work is the problems of representing the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in sources of foreign origin, the appearance and existence of stereotypes in this sphere of consciousness. The result of the study was the monograph “Rzeczpospolita XVII wieku w oczach cudzoziemców” (Wrocław — Warszawa — Kraków, 1993), which provoked a lively discussion among Polish historians, which was joined by well-known experts such as S. Kot and J. Tazbir.

Recently, Hinchevska-Hennel has been fruitfully working on the study of the extremely capacious documentary legacy of the activities of the Pontiff Nuncia in the Commonwealth. The processing of the Vatican’s archive resulted in 2 volumes of documents prepared under its editorship, as well as 2 monographs dedicated to the person and activities of the Ambassador of the Papal State in Poland 1636-1643 M. Filonardi. Source searches in the archives of Venice led to the preparation of the publication of the Hinchevska-Hennel important source on the history of Poland - the historical work of the envoy of the Republic of Venice before the hetman Bogdan Khmelnitsky Alberto Vimini da Cheneda. The interest of Hinchevskaya-Hennel in the problems of the Brest Church Union of 1596 and interfaith relations in the Commonwealth is constant. Separate works are devoted to the history of the Kiev-Mohyla Academy.
