The old name of the bridge - the Bridge between the islands comes from the fact that this is the only one of the many bridges of the Palace Park that connects the two islands of the White Lake , the rest of the bridges connect the islands with the continent.
Description
The bridge has two wide coastal abutments, designed in the form of terraces - observation platforms. The terraces and the span of the bridge are surrounded by a balustrade , stone benches for relaxation are arranged in the middle of the bridge.
Since the architecture of the bridge is designed for perception from a long distance, its elements create a play of light and shadow, clearly visible from afar.
History
During the Great Patriotic War, the bridge was damaged by fragments, the balustrade and benches were destroyed. When the German troops retreated from Gatchina, it was planned to blow up the bridge (after the city was liberated, mines for explosives were found in the abutments of the bridge).
After that, the bridge was completely restored twice - in 1969 and in the 1980s . Currently (2010) the bridge is again in ruin.
