Most of the Olympic licenses for the 2018 Games were distributed according to the results of the countries' performance in the offset of the Nations Cup in the framework of the World Cup 2016/2017 [3] . According to its results, the German team took 1st place, both in the men's standings [4] and in the women's [5] . Thanks to this result, the German NOC received the right to declare the maximum possible number of biathletes to participate in the competition [6] . Moreover, in one discipline, a country can exhibit no more than four biathletes [3] . In addition to Germany, only French athletes were able to achieve the same result.

  Speed Skating

Compared to previous Games, a number of changes have occurred in the speed skating program. Competitions in the mass start were added, where athletes will need to overcome 16 laps, with three intermediate finishes, the points earned on which will help in the distribution of places, starting from the 4th [12] . Also, for the first time since 1994, skaters will run a distance of 500 meters only once [13] . The distribution of quotas was based on the results of the first four stages of the World Cup [14] . Based on their results, a consolidated qualification list was formed [15] , according to which the German team won Olympic licenses at all distances except for the men's mass start and the team pursuit race [16] .

Most of the Olympic licenses for the 2018 Games were distributed according to the results of the athletes' performance at the 2017 World Cup [17] . According to its results, the German national team was able to win one license in individual skating and two at once in doubles [18] , which was made possible thanks to the second place of Alyona Savchenko and Bruno Masso . To obtain the missing Olympic quotas, it was necessary to successfully perform at the Nebelhorn Trophy tournament , where it was necessary to get into the number of 4-6 strongest depending on discipline [17] . Following the results of three days of competition, German athletes managed to win the missing license in ice dancing. It was brought by Cavita Lorenz and Panagiotis Politsoakis , who took third place in the tournament [19] . Also, the German team got the right to compete in team competitions [20] .

Team competition

Team competitions in alpine skiing will debut in the program of the Olympic Games. The national team consists of 4 athletes (2 men and 2 women). Team competitions are held as parallel competitions using the gates and flags of the giant slalom. The winner of each individual round brings 1 point to his team. With an equal score, each team receives one point. If an equal score takes place at the end of the tour (2: 2), the team with the best total time of the best woman and best man (or second best if the first have equal time) wins the tour.

Compared to previous Games, changes have occurred in the halfpipe and slopestyle. Now, in the finals of these disciplines, freestylers began to make three attempts each [38] [39] , while the final position of the athletes is still determined by the result of the best of them. Qualification of athletes for participation in the Olympic Games was carried out on the basis of the FIS special qualification rating as of January 21, 2018 [40] . For each discipline, certain conditions were established by fulfilling which athletes could qualify for joining the national team to participate in the Olympic Games [41] . According to the results of the qualification selection, the German team won 12 Olympic licenses, but later refused 4 of them, while having received a redistribution quota in the women's slopestyle [42] .

Men

The first 8 teams in the IIHF ranking after the 2015 World Cup were automatically qualified for participation in the men's Olympic tournament [45] . The German team took 13th place in this rating, as a result of which it got the opportunity to start in the qualifying tournament immediately from the final qualifying round [46] . According to the principle of the “snake” draw practiced by IIHF, the German team fell into group E and got into rivals Latvia, Austria, as well as Japan, who won the pre-qualification tournament [47] . The Olympic qualification was held in the capital of Latvia, Riga, from September 1 to 4, 2016. The German national team won three victories with a difference of goals of 14: 2, and in the final meeting the hosts of the tournament were beaten by the Latvian team, which also claimed to be in the Games before the last round, with a score of 3: 2 [48] . On January 23, the final composition of the German national team for the Olympic Games was announced [49] . On January 29, it became known that defender Denis Royle would not be able to help the German national team in the tournament, he would be replaced by Zinan Akdag [50] .
