Biography

Alexander Alexandrovich Gamburtsev was born on August 9, 1866 [1] in the family of Lieutenant Colonel Alexander Fedorovich Gamburtsev (1826-1888), who graduated from military service with the rank of Major General, and Lyudmila Vasilievna (nee Markova) [2] [3] . By religion he was Orthodox [1] .

He graduated from the 4th Moscow Cadet Corps , after which on August 31, 1884 he was enlisted as a cunker at the 3rd Military Alexander School , from which he was released to the Kexholm Grenadier Regiment on August 11, 1886 with production as second lieutenant (with seniority from August 11, 1885). He was promoted to senior officers from August 7, 1889. He graduated from the two classes of the Nikolaev Academy of the General Staff in the 1st category, after which he returned to his regiment. On December 6, 1894, in connection with the granting of the rights to the Kexholm Regiment to the Old Guard, it was renamed the Sentinel of the Guard while retaining its previous seniority [1] [4] .

From September 21, 1896 to March 9, 1898 he was on secondment to the 3rd (formerly 4th) Moscow Cadet Corps as an educational officer. On March 9, 1898 he was seconded to the Moscow Military School as a junior officer. On April 9, 1900, he was promoted to headquarters captain , and on May 9 of the same year he was assigned to the same position at the Pavlovsk Military School . April 1, 1901 promoted to captain . On December 7, 1905 he was appointed commander of a cadet company of the Pavlovsky Military School [1] [4] . On December 6, 1908 he was promoted to colonel with the transfer from the Life Guards of the Kexholm Regiment to the 1st Life Grenadier Ekaterinoslav Regiment [5] , where he was appointed commander of the battalion [6] , and on October 28, 1910 transferred to the 7th Grenadier Samogit Regiment [ 7] .

On April 15, 1913, Colonel Gamburtsev was appointed commander of the 13th Infantry Regiment , at the head of which he entered the First World War . For courage in the August battles of 1914, by order of the commander of the 8th Army, approved by the Highest Order on February 24, 1915, he was awarded the George weapons [8] . In battles on the Carpathian passes in November 1914 he distinguished himself in taking a fortified enemy position, for which he was awarded the Order of St. George of the 4th degree by order of the commander of the 8th army, approved by the Highest Order on April 24, 1915 [9] . In a battle near the village of Tvorilni on February 14, 1915, he was seriously wounded [10] . May 1, 1915 "for differences in matters against the enemy" promoted to major general , with seniority from October 17, 1914 [1] .

May 24, 1915 he was dismissed from the post of commander of the 13th Infantry Regiment with the appointment to the reserve of ranks at the headquarters of the Kiev military district and with enlistment in the army infantry [11] . On September 23, 1915 he was appointed commander of the brigade of the 37th Infantry Division [12] , but on December 18 of the same year he was dismissed from his post with the appointment to the reserve of ranks at the headquarters of the Odessa Military District [13] . On April 5, 1916, he was appointed general for assignments under the commander of the troops of the Moscow Military District . June 22, 1916 appointed chief of the 41st infantry reserve brigade. April 22, 1917 was appointed commander of the 64th Infantry Division [1] .

After the October Revolution continued to remain in Russia. He joined the Red Army . As of October 1918, he was a member of the Main Statutory Commission of the All-Russian General Staff, and later served in the Main Directorate of Educational Establishments of the Red Army. He died before 1934 [1] [2] .

Family

Alexander Alexandrovich was married to Olga Semyonovna, who graduated from the Institute of Noble Maidens in St. Petersburg, and had two sons - Gregory (1903–1955) and Vladimir (1906–?). Grigory Alexandrovich Gamburtsev later became a famous Soviet scientist - a geophysicist, academician, director of the Geophysical Institute of the USSR Academy of Sciences [2] [14] .

Alexander Alexandrovich Gamburtsev was awarded the following prizes [1] :

    “For the fact that in a battle on August 26-27, 1914 on the front, Gumenets-Rumno, commanding a convoy, repelled attacks of significantly superior enemy forces, and on August 28 and 29, 1914, repelled an offensive of superior enemy forces on the front south of Dornfeld , managing personally all the time in battle from points subjected to heavy shelling ” ;
  • Order of St. Vladimir 3rd degree (February 3, 1914); swords to the order (February 20, 1915);
  • Order of St. Vladimir, 4th class (March 11, 1912); swords and bow to the order (May 14, 1915);
  • Order of St. Anne of the 2nd degree (May 9, 1908); swords for the order (October 9, 1916);
  • Order of St. Anne of the 3rd degree (May 6, 1903);
  • Order of St. Stanislav 1st degree (December 6, 1916)
    - “for excellent zealous service and special works caused by the circumstances of the current war” ;
  • Order of St. Stanislav 2nd degree (May 6, 1905).
