Achilles Tathius , Achilles Tatsius [1] ( Greek Ἀχιλλεὺς Τάτιος ) - Greek writer, II century A.D. e., known primarily as the author of the novel " Leucippus and Clitofont ."
The spelling variant of the name "Tacius", in addition to Russia, is also practiced in Spanish ( Spanish. Aquiles Tacio ), Portuguese ( port. Aquiles Tácio ) and a number of other languages. The only source of information about this author is an article in the Dictionary of the Courts (X century), where his last name is written as Staty :
Achilles Staty ( Ἀχιλλεὺς Στάτιος ) from Alexandria, author of the story of Leucippus and Clitophon and other love stories in eight books. He eventually became a Christian and a bishop. He wrote the works “On the Sphere” ( Περὶ σφαίρας ), “On the Etymology” ( Περὶ ἐτυμολογίας ) and “The Historical Mixture” ( Ἱστορίαν σύμμικτον ), which mentions many great and wonderful people. His style in all these works is close to the style of love stories.
The comment by the drafter of the Courts that Achilles was a Christian and even a bishop is highly doubtful. In his novel, one cannot find faint allusions to Christian ideas.
The text of the preserved astronomical treatise "On the sphere" is difficult to compare with the style of the novel.
