Biography
The group takes its origins in 2005 in Jalasjärvi , Finland , when Juho Mäntylä and Mikko Kivistö [1] [2] met after they left the teams they played [3] . They decided to create something that would unite them with friends and music. So the band The Maytoes appeared . It already consisted of Matti, Juho, Timo, Mikko, Ville and Petri. They played melancholy and atmospheric rock in the spirit of Coldplay and Doves , and the starting point for The Maytoes was indie -style sound.
The first significant performance for the group took place in 2006 at the Aukusti festival in Jalasjärvi [3] .
In addition to their native Finland, The Maytoes in 2011 visited St. Petersburg . On October 21, they performed at the Orlandina Club as part of the Rock Youth Immunity International Youth Live Music Festival as a special guest [4] [5] .
For ten years from the moment of foundation, the musicians hone their skills to finally be in the spotlight with a new name - Sakia , which was invented by the drummer of the band Petri Haakan.
| - We probably went over two hundred different variants of the name of the group. When Petri suggested the name Sakia, I thought it was funny and stupid, my classmates would confirm. However, after much deliberation, I decided that Sakia is a pretty good name. From Arabic, this translates as "a mechanical device for lifting water"Matti Peryal for Häku Päällä-festivaali, 2016 |
Returning to active work, Sakia got the opportunity to work with the famous Finnvox studio in Helsinki . It also recorded the first official single of the band " God Forsaken Land ", which includes the song of the same name and the track " All Ships ", recorded at the end of 2014 together with the Swedish producer Jonas Olsson ( Jonas Olsson ). He also produced albums by Poisonblack , Robin , Pauli Hanhiniemi and other Finnish artists [6] .
The second single was the song " Parallel Universe ", released in December 2016 . The single was featured in new Spotify releases and spent several days holding first place in the Finland Viral 50 playlist. Initially, the song was called “ Parallel Heart Station ” and sounded like a ballad, but later it was fundamentally changed [7] .
| - We recorded the song last spring, but in the summer we realized that we were not 100% satisfied with it. So I rewrote the lyrics and Matti (our vocalist) came back to record the vocals again. This delayed the release, but made the song much better. We added drums and slightly increased the tempo of the song. Who knew that such a painful song could sound optimistic?Timo Mäkel in an interview with Fourculture |
The songwriters in the Sakia band are guitarist Timo Meakel.
After the second release, Sakia changed their producer and this time became the experienced recorder and mixer Aki Sihvonen, who also released, among other things, the album “Soft Created the World” by Softengine [8] . Songs released by Sakia were produced by Simo Jurek Reunamäki, known for his work on the albums Antti Tuiskunen , Erin and Johanna Kurkela .
In 2017, Sakia returned to the studio to continue recording a new album. In late summer, the group announced plans to release a new single. Later, Sakia shared information that the single will be called " New Silence ". The release took place on September 15 of the same year.
Sakia has been touring extensively in Finland, and has performed several times with artists such as Mira Luoti , Typeface and Oliver. In 2015, they also visited the cities of Tampere , Oulu , Lahti and Jyväskylä with the Typeface Sakia group as part of the IndieFall15 mini-tour.
Sakia received positive reviews from Finnish YleX , British Nordicreviews and even the American Indie Obsessive , which expanded the boundaries of their popularity abroad [9] .
At the moment, the group is working on a new single, which is scheduled for release in the spring of 2018.
