History
The Congregation dates back to the Congregation for the Establishment of Churches, created by Pope Sixtus V in 1588 . In 1908, Pope Pius X renamed it the Consist Congregation by the apostolic constitution Sapienti concilio .
On August 15, 1967, Pope Paul VI in the Apostolic Constitution of Regimini Ecclesiae Universae appropriated the congregation its current name.
The modern structure of the congregation and its powers are determined by the Constitution of the Pastor Bonus of Pope John Paul II of 1988 .
Structure and Responsibilities
The congregation is engaged in the formation of new churches, as well as their division and association. The competence of the congregation also includes military ordinaries . Another area of activity of the congregation is the oversight of the activities of bishops and their relationship with the Roman Curia. When the bishop is replaced at the department, the Congregation studies the candidacy and presents it to the pope, who makes the final decision.
The congregation also includes the Office for the Coordination of Pastoral Episcopal Visits, the Office for the Coordination of Military Residency and the Pontifical Commission for Latin America .
