Poems about Petersburg
translation of Samuel Marshak
This midnight is full of magic
Marble of buildings shone with shine
And in a sleep restless Neva
Flares in black, motionless granite.
And get up in the middle of the night blue
Two giants - two sphinxes by the waters
Quietly listen to the murmur of the Neva
White wind sings a song to them
I go to them in dumb shine
In the realm of white exciting charms
The city sleeps, weighed down by sin
And in a dream he suffocates a nightmare
Swarms froze over the palaces
Light clouds - azure, like ice.
Here are the exiles - my brothers
Sphinxes doze off the northern waters
