Biography

Education and early career

Biobaku was born in Igbore, Abeokuta in the family of a famous Islamic figure. Saburi studied at Ogbe Methodist Elementary School in Abeokut, then at Ibadan Government College and Yaba College of Technology. He attended Cambridge University to obtain a master's degree, and entered the Institute of Historical Studies at the University of London to become a doctor of historical sciences.

Returning to Nigeria, Saburi Biobaku began teaching practice, first at the “native” Ibadan Government College, then at Ibadan University , gradually moving up the administrative steps of the university structure.

The subsequent career of the scientist

In 1957, Saburi Biobaku wrote one of his most famous scientific works, The Egba's and their Neighbors, entirely devoted to the historical development of the sub- ethnic group of the Yoruba Egba and its influence on the overall development of the United Kingdom. Initially, the work was conceived as a dissertation , but in the process of writing turned into a 99-page opus. For its time, the work was revolutionary, because it was only the second authoritative historical study from Nigerian history, published in Cambridge.

Later, Biobaku publishes Sources of Yoruba History, 1973, as well as a number of other works and scientific articles.

In the early years of Nigeria’s independence, Biobaku cautiously supported pan-Africanism ideas prevailing in Nigerian society. In 1965, he became deputy rector (president) of the University of Lagos, although his election was more likely a tribute to "ethnic favoritism" - in accordance with the unspoken rule, representatives of the Yoruba people should be everywhere in Nigeria in the leadership of all structures.

Biobaku devoted his whole life to serving the Yoruba society, without stopping historical research and scientific research, and also taking an active part in public life until his death. Biobaku painfully experienced the military regime, in fact - the dictatorship of Sani Abach , Kanuri by nationality, during 1993-1998 , actively fought on his own for its overthrow.

Throughout his life, he also served as Chairman of the Nigerian National Antiques Commission, and headed the publishing board of the African Encyclopedia (Encarta Africana).
