Biography
Yakov Petrovich Gershkovich was born on August 21, 1953 in Kiev . He made his first steps into archeology in his school years - he attended the archeology club of the Kiev Palace of Pioneers in the 1960s (under the direction of V. N. Gladilin).
In 1977 he graduated with honors from the history department of Tashkent State University. Immediately after that, in 1977 he began working as a laboratory assistant at the Institute of Archeology. He led the excavation of mounds and ancient settlements as part of Donetsk (later the Second Seversky-Donetsk) and the Krasnoznamensk expedition of the Institute of Archeology.
From 1989 to 1993, Gershkovich worked at the Archeologist Scientific and Production Cooperative [4] , which was created at the Institute of Archeology, exploring mounds and multi-layer settlements of the Bronze Age in the Seversky Donets Basin and on the Donetsk Ridge.
In 1993, Gershkovich returned to work at the Institute of Archeology and successfully defended his thesis “Sabatinovskaya culture of the Lower Dnieper and Northwest Azov ”. Since then, he has been working in the Department of Archeology of the Eneolithic - Bronze Age. From 1986 to 1999, he held the position of researcher at the Institute of Archeology of the NAS of Ukraine, and in 1999 he became a senior researcher at the Institute of Archeology [5] .
Significant for Gershkovich was the Ukrainian-German expedition to study the Subotovsky settlement in the Cherkasy region in 1994-1995. Over time, he led this project and published the monograph "Subotovskoe settlement". In 2017, according to this book, he successfully defended a dissertation for the degree of Doctor of Historical Sciences at the Institute of Archeology of NASU.
Yakov Gershkovich is the author of more than 130 publications. First of all, these are the monographs “Studien zur spätbronzezeitlichen Sabatinovka-Kultur am unteren Dnepr und an der Westkuste des Azov'schen Meers” [6] and “Subotovskoe settlement”. He substantiated a fundamentally new, complex, interpretation of the so-called ash-gazers of the Belogrudov type [7] and patterns of cultural-genetic processes in the south of Eastern Europe of the Bronze Age and in the transition period to the Early Iron Age.
Under his scientific supervision A. Korokhin and D. Kushtan successfully defended their candidate dissertations.
He is a member of the editorial board of serial scientific publications “Materials and research from the archeology of Eastern Ukraine” (Lugansk), “Archaeological Almanac ” (Donetsk; Simferopol) and the English version of the journal “Archeology” (Ukrainian Archeology). Together with Professor S. N. Sanzharov, he organized the publication and posthumous reprint of the book of his teacher S. N. Bratchenko “Levents Fortress. The monument of culture of the Bronze Age ” [8] .
The initiator of the creation of the “Code of Ethics of a Professional Archaeologist” adopted by the Scientific Council of the Institute of Archeology of the NAS of Ukraine [9] . Chairman of the VGO "Association of Archaeologists of Ukraine" [10] . He made presentations at numerous scientific symposia and conferences.
Scholarship recipient of a scientific exchange program named after W. Fulbright (USA) and the German Scientific Exchange Service (DAAD).
