Garth John da Silva ( born Garth John da Silva ; born December 28, 1973 , Wellington ) is a New Zealand boxer , a representative of the first heavy weight category. He played for the national boxing team of New Zealand in the second half of the 1990s, the bronze medalist of the Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur, the winner and medalist of tournaments of national importance, the participant of the Summer Olympic Games in Atlanta .

Biography

Garth da Silva was born on December 28, 1973 in Wellington . Grew up in a sports family, his father John da Silva - a famous wrestler in New Zealand, a participant in the Olympic Games in Melbourne [1] .

In 1996, Garth entered the main part of the New Zealand national team and, thanks to a series of successful performances, was granted the right to defend the honor of the country at the Atlanta Summer Olympics . In the first heavy weight category classification, he defeated Irishman Katel O'Grady ahead of schedule, but then at the 1/8 finals stage with a score of 8:12 he was defeated by the representative of Belarus Sergey Dychkov [2] .

After the Olympics, da Silva remained on the New Zealand boxing team and continued to take part in major international tournaments. So, in 1997, he visited the World Championships in Budapest , where in the 1/16 finals he lost to American Devarrilu Williamson , a well-known professional boxer in the future.

He achieved the greatest success at the adult level in the 1998 season, when in the first heavyweight he won a bronze medal award at the Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur. He boxed at the 1999 World Championships in Houston , where he was stopped in the 1/16 finals by the representative of Uzbekistan Ruslan Chagaev [3] .
