Biography
Born into a peasant family. He graduated from elementary school in Odorhei , gymnasium in Blazh ( 1838 - 1841 ), the theological seminary in Vienna ( 1843 - 1846 ). In Vienna, in addition to theological sciences, he studied philosophy and philology . After training, he taught philosophy at the Blagoe Lyceum .
For active participation in the events of 1848 , Pumnula was persecuted, and he emigrated to Bukovina . He lives with his friend Heraclius Porumbescu, the father of the outstanding composer Ciprian Porumbescu . Together with the Gurmuzaki brothers, in 1848 he published the Bukovina newspaper and became its editor.
February 28, 1849 won the competition for the vacant post of head of the first department of the Romanian language and literature at the Chernivtsi Higher Gymnasium; This position is held until the end of his life.
In addition to the gymnasium, he teaches at a theological seminary. Actively engaged in cultural activities. In scientific and creative activities he proved himself as a talented linguist , author of didactic textbooks and other scientific works.
He promoted the use of the Latin alphabet instead of the Cyrillic alphabet, unsuccessfully tried to ban neologisms . He was a man of encyclopedic culture who believed in the power of education for the development of national revival and considered the central “question of language” [2] .
One of the great merits of A. Pumnula was that he was one of the founders of the spiritual life of the Romanians of Bukovina.
Aron died. He died on January 12, 1866 in Chernivtsi . Mihai Eminescu , who was a pupil of Pumnula in the Chernivtsi gymnasium, dedicated one of his poems to him.
