Mendelssohn was born in New York, where he graduated from high school. George Washington , in 1934 at the University of Michigan received the title of Bachelor of Arts [5] . In 1938 he graduated from the medical faculty of Cornell University located in Ithaca ( New York , USA ).

After receiving a doctor’s degree in medicine, he resided at the University’s clinical base in New York Hospital , then worked in his department of obstetrics and gynecology [4] ) by 1959 [6] . During 1950-1959 he worked as a professor at Cornell University and an obstetrician-gynecologist at the hospital.

In 1941, he married Mary Krause ( born Marie V. Krause ), who was a dietitian . They had no children. Mary Krause has written several books on her profession, one of which is Food, Nutrition and Diet Therapy, with additions reprinted 14 times already (latest edition of 2016, ISBN 978-0323340755 ). Curtis's literary tests were not very successful. His only book, Cardiac Disease in Pregnancy [7], was poorly bought [8] .

Green Turtle Reef

Despite a successful career, Curtis and Mary left New York. They rented a small plane and went on a trip to the Caribbean islands . Once they accidentally sat down to replenish supplies on the Green Turtle Reef , one of the barrier islands of the Abaco Archipelago . At that time, the population of the islands was 700 people [8] . No medical assistance was available. The following year, Mendelssohn officially took leave, allegedly to work as a gynecologist at the Green Turtle Reef Clinic in the Bahamas . He worked as a doctor and veterinarian at the same time. In 1961, exactly one year later, he resigned as professor. Curtis Lester worked on the island for 31 years as a state doctor, but in reality almost as a volunteer. He did not receive proper compensation from the capital of the Commonwealth of Nassau . Mendelssohn used most of the money for medicine and equipment. His phone number 5500 was easy enough to remember, all the inhabitants of the island turned to him. Mendelssohn had to provide assistance in road accidents and water accidents, one of which was the collision of high-speed boats with 4 injured [9] .

Curtis and his wife lived in the Bahamas until 1990. They moved to West Palm Beach , Florida . Mary Krause died in 1994. In 1998, Mendelssohn married a forty-year-old woman, originally from the Bahamas . His wife Margaret ( Daisy Marguerite Sawyer / Lowe ) looked after him until his death on October 13, 2002 [10] [11] [12] .

Contribution to Medicine

The name of Curtis Lester Mendelssohn became world famous thanks to the description of the syndrome of aspiration of acidic stomach contents. The doctor probably showed interest in him after one case, of which he was a witness in the obstetrics and gynecology department of the New York Hospital . Some time after aspiration of the liquid vomit, progressive respiratory failure developed. This was interpreted as an acute attack of bronchial asthma , which was complicated by pulmonary edema [5] .
