Story

In the news, the reporter tells the story of a village in Turkey, in which many people mysteriously died seemingly from pneumonia, while a team of scientists tried to find a cure. Unbeknownst to them, a group of terrorists disguised as farmers starts shooting and killing scientists and a news group. Soon after the attack, employees of the South Korean embassy in Istanbul discuss the attack and at that moment one of their long-missing agents returns.

Meanwhile, in Hong Kong, Buck Yuen works as a seller of sports equipment. After an unsuccessful day at work, he eats at the mall and intuitively assumes that a robbery is about to happen. Buck disrupts the burglars' plans and draws huge media attention to his actions. Later, a stranger approaches Baku, wanting to talk with the hero who prevented the robbery. The stranger pretends to be Detective Mani Liu and tells that he is looking for men who are similar in age and description to Buck, because one of them may be the son of a rich Korean named Park Won Yoon (Mr. Pak), who wants to leave his fortune to his real son. Mani is beaten by his creditors and Buck takes him home. Meni directs Buck to a colleague for an interview. Buck was an orphan, but he had vague dreams about his parents cooing over him, his father holding a shiny thing.

After talking with Manie's colleague, Buck travels to South Korea to meet with Mr. Pak, who is dying of brain cancer. Buck notices the surveillance of mysterious people in a car. Before talking with Pak, he met with a Korean journalist named Carmen Won, who wanted to ask him questions about Pak. Carmen revealed that Mr. Park was a Korean double agent who had switched sides recently (as shown in an earlier scene). She asks Buck to find out the reasons why Park became a defector. When he returns to the hospital, he witnesses how the bandits are trying to interrogate Pak. Buck fights off the attackers and Pak offers him to “play hide and seek”. He leaves Baku with a pectoral cross (which turned out to be that brilliant thing from a dream), confirming that he is his father. When Mr. Pak died, Buck dispelled his ashes at the grave of his wife, fulfilling the last wish of the deceased. On the grave he found the first key to the “game” - the message “Wait for me” engraved on the gravestone in English. Having left the cemetery, Buck and Carmen are forced to flee from the same bandits who previously attacked Pak. Buck understands that the letters from that message correspond to the numbers of the phone number and calls on it, this turns out to be the number of the Bank of Istanbul.

Once in Turkey, Buck went to the bank and tried to get the contents of Mr. Pak's cell. Pak's cross turned out to be the seal needed to retrieve the contents of the cell. Opening it, Buck discovered a large sum of money and a bible, which led him to think that the "game" was over. Shortly after he left the bank he was met by a group of bandits who seized several taxi cars. He fought off them, but there were too many of them. Fortunately, the police came to the rescue on time and the bandits fled. Buck and the police were sure that the bandits needed only money, but it was clear that they were looking for something else, because they left empty-handed. Enjoying a vacation in Turkey, Buck noticed a Chinese woman who had the same words embroidered on a scarf as in a message from Pak (“wait for me”). He followed her and they eventually met. The girl's name was Young and she agreed to meet with Buck again, appointing him a specific time and place.

Before meeting with Yong, Bak visited a Turkish bath. While washing, another group of Turkish bandits pounced on him, whose leader demanded some kind of “thing” from him. Buck fought back and ran away, but was late for meeting Yong, who left him a note inviting him to meet later in the temple. It was then that Carmen appeared with Assistant Ashley. It turned out that she was working for the CIA, together with Ashley, she informed Buck that the subject that interests everyone so much was this new biological weapon, Anthrax II, more powerful than usual. She had already killed many Turks, since Turkey was chosen as a testing ground. Park Won Yoon was involved in this, which was the cause of his brain cancer. Buck also finds out that crime boss Lee San Zen, nicknamed the "craftsman," wants to buy a new virus and uses Yong to contact Buck because he thinks he has information about it.

When Buck met with Young, she confirmed that her boss is Zen and that a deal was made between him and Buck’s father. Buck and Yong were later captured by bandits and brought to their village. They turned out to be a Turkish gang who wanted to return the virus in order to stop the bloodshed, because it was in their village that the virus was tested. Their leader again asked Buck where this "thing" is. They tortured him but he had no idea what they were talking about. Later, mercenaries attacked the village. During this, Buck was able to escape and free Yong. To prevent the chase, he destroyed the pier, made an impromptu raft and, together with Yong, sailed into the open sea. Later they got to Zen, who sent his people (those mercenaries) to save them. Buck found out that Yong was a drug addict and Zen slave and her life was in mortal danger. Zen then offered Baku a deal - money and freedom for Yong in exchange for Anthrax II. Buck refuses and says that he does not know about it, but Zen gives time to find the virus.

Buck remembered a bible from a bank cell and his intuition led him to a nearby church. During the confession, he met a priest who knew Pak. He brought Buck to the basement, in which Mr. Pak temporarily stayed, where Buck found an item that many wanted - two ampoules of Anthrax II. Buck reluctantly gives up the ampoules to save Yong, realizing this will lead to a huge number of deaths. But Zen tricked him - Young had already received a lethal dose of drugs and soon died at the train station. Buck was arrested as a suspect in her death. Carmen and Ashley secured his release. Buck told them that he had given the vials in exchange for Yong's life. Now the CIA is forced to pay Zen to get the virus back; Buck decides to do the right thing. Carmen tells him about Zen plans for the next day and when it is best to attack him.

During the CIA's surveillance of Zen, Buck destroys his plane and Zen has to hide in a car with his henchman. Buck catches up with them and fights them in their car. In the end, he wins, but the car gets stuck in the back of the truck carrying petroleum products, because of which he lights up. Carmen meets Buck on the highway and tells him that the truck must maintain a speed of 80 km / h, otherwise it will explode. Buck demands help save the truck driver, his daughter and son, before he gives her Anthrax II. Buck pulls them out of the truck one at a time, but cannot save himself. Mani Liu suddenly appears in a helicopter and tries to help Baku, but unsuccessfully. At the last moment, when the truck began to fall from the edge of the bridge, Buck jumped from it, grabbed the fence of the bridge. After the jump, Buck rolled down the slope, receiving severe damage. After he passed out, Mani found him and the virus and took him.

When Buck woke up in the hospital, Mani came and discovered that this whole adventure was an intelligence mission organized by an American intelligence agency in which Buck played the role of an unofficial agent (random spy). His background as an orphan coupled with extremely keen intuition and excellent martial arts skills made him an ideal candidate for the role of a freelance agent who could carry out special missions. Since he was not an official agent and could not know about the mission, it was chosen as a "game" for him. His intuition helped him correctly interpret all the clues and successfully complete the mission. All these dreams about parents were an illusion that Mani created by pouring strong substances into Buck's beer when he was at his house.

In the scene after the credits, Buck is already an agent and he is on a mission in Italy, disguised as a bearded messenger. He delivered a briefcase to a man who was then arrested by the police.

Criticism

On the Rotten Tomatoes website , the film is rated 29% based on 7 reviews with an average rating of 4.7 out of 10 [1] .

Exit

Dimension acquired film distribution rights outside of Asia. As in the rest of Chan’s films, which Disney was a distributor of, several scenes were cut out, dialogs in other languages were duplicated, and music was changed. However, Dimension made so many changes that it almost changed the entire film, for example:

  1. Buck Yuen name changed to Jackie Chan
  2. Zen name changed to Lee.
  3. Anthrax II turned into Opia Max, a new and more effective form of opium
  4. In some cases, the scenes were actually redone. For example, in the Hong Kong version, Buck Yuen and colleague Mani arrive at a South Korean hospital, talk to the doctor, then Buck visits Carmen Wong and returns to the hospital where he drives away the bandits who attacked his father, then talks with him. However, in the Dimension version, they arrive at the hospital, then “Jackie” speaks with his father, then visits Carmen Wong and returns to the hospital where he fights off the bandits, but Dimension added the “dying” sound effect and used the scene where Mr. Pak breathes with difficulty to hint that he died due to bandits.
  5. Many dialogs in English were duplicated into foreign languages, thereby creating a language barrier between Jackie Chan and the other characters, which was not in the original version. Many conversations in English have been rewritten due to a change in plot.
  6. You may notice that Buck’s dialogue is sometimes duplicated in a voice that does not belong to Jackie Chan, including scenes where he speaks English
