Hoo Maru ( 鳳凰 丸 ) is a Western-style frigate built by order of the Tokugawa Shogunate government during the Bakumatsu period in Japan in response to Commander Perry’s expedition and an increase in the number of foreign warships in Japan’s territorial waters.
