History
Initially, these lands were part of the department of Tercero Abajo . In 1860, the northern part of the Tercero-Abajo department was separated into a separate Union department. In 1888, the eastern part of the Union department was separated into a separate department of Marcos Juarez .
Geography
The department is located in the southeast of the province of Cordoba .
